Is Dracula back?
This is book two in the series and you can already see a pattern forming in the titles. They always refer to a mysteriously famous person.
It’s still 1888 in this book. Audrey Rose and Thomas got the chance of a lifetime to go study at the most legendary forensic school in Europe. On their way to Romania, where the castle is located, a corpse is discovered. However, there is something special about this corpse. He got ill very sudden and died, even though this was a young man. But our two leads don’t get a chance to examine this corpse right away.
When they arrived at the school, they were told that they were there on a trial period. The headmaster also didn’t like females in the forensic sciences. They can not handle something so messy. By the way, if you hadn’t guessed by now, the school is located in the castle where Vlad the Impaler used to live.
Throughout the story, more bloodless bodies are discovered. This starts rumours that Dracula is back, but Audrey Rose and Thomas do everything they can to solve the murders. They even go through torture chambers under the castle to find out the truth.
You get a big dose of myth and Victorian forensic sciences in this book. If you imagine the books in your head, as I do, I have to warn you the scenes in the torture chambers might be gruesome.
However, you can notice the romantic aspect becoming more prominent. The horror elements do keep this book from turning into a cheesy romance novel. This is still a book about solving a crime.
